Hartlepool and North Tees Hospital

Posted by Phil Wilson, MP for Sedgefield, at 14:41, Fri 18 June 2010:

The cancellation of the £450 million hospital destined for Wynyard is very disappointing news. The approval of the scheme by the previous Government was not rushed. Since my election in 2007 I attended several meetings at the Depaertment of Health to discuss the scheme. The new hospital had the approval of NHS regulators and was seen as value for money. Because of its proposed location the hospital would have attracted businesses to the area creating jobs and adding value to the Tees Valley. The scheme was also clinically led. The bulk of the finance would not have been needed until 2012 and spread over a three year period from that date. The Government's view is short sighted. The Prime Minister said during the election that any minister who came to him proposing cuts to the frontline would be sent back to the drawing board. You can not get any closer to the frontline than a new hospital, but I do not see any minister sent back to the drawing board. I think the North East will see more of the same in the coming months.
