SOUTH WEST BEDFORDSHIRE MP PRESSES PRIME MINISTER TO ENSURE THAT THE MINE CLEARING EQUIPMENT FOR OUR TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN IS “THE BEST IN THE WORLD”.
South West Bedfordshire MP Andrew Selous has pressed the Prime Minister to ensure that our troops in Afghanistan have the best mine clearing equipment in the world available to them at all times. Andrew Selous said, “ Many service families write to me with their concerns about the safety of our troops in Afghanistan. As a former TA soldier, I understand their anxieties and this is one area where we should demand the very best equipment for our troops.”
Last year, Andrew Selous spoke in the Commons about TA soldiers not being paid while they trained to go on tours of duty in Afghanistan. That policy was later changed.
The exchange in the Commons was as follows: Andrew Selous (South West Bedfordshire) (Con): Does the Prime Minister believe that the mine clearance equipment available to our troops is now the best in the world?
The Prime Minister: Certainly I had a presentation out in Afghanistan on the equipment now being used and the training undertaken, and what our troops are able to do is incredibly impressive. The truth-I am sure that the former Defence Secretary will agree-is that we have to keep on investing and catching up with the latest technologies that the enemy use, because they are incredibly cunning at trying to find new ways of making those things even harder to find.
