New Hospital
Posted by Alex Cunningham, MP for Stockton North, at 07:15, Fri 18 June 2010:
I am sorry to say that David Cameron has fulfilled his promise to the North East and made sure we are hardest hit with his cuts - he has cancelled our new hospital to repalce the North Tees and Hartlepool Univesity Hospitals as one of his first decisions. I hope our communities will make their voices heard. You can contact me at alex.cunningham.mp@parliament.uk

If Labour had not bankrupted the country by spending money the country did not have he wouldn't have had to.
No one with an ounce of sense wants the hospital. The infrastructure in the area is unsuitable and the closure of either hospital means that residents of the affected area will then have to travel miles to receive treatment.
Yet another crackpot vanity project from a party that will hopefully never, ever see power in my or indeed my childrens lifetime.
To summarise my thoughts on your party I'll end with a quote from a man who understood socialism and the Labour party all too well...
"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
Winston Churchill

Clearly we disagree on both fact and belief. We will see how much misery the people in the Tory party share with our people in the North East as a result of their budget and other decisions. On the hospital, it was planned over five years to meet our future health needs and to give the people of our area the best in provision like other areas have but again the Tories find the North East an easy target. Why should our people have outdated faciltiies and why was it just the one hospital in four that was axed and three given the go-ahead? A straightforward political decision against an area that has largely rejected the Tories and their LibDem partners.

>> an area that has largely rejected the Tories and their LibDem partners.
Tell that to Vera Baird.
The days of sticking a red rosette on a monkey and having people in the North East vote for it (because the tories are 'evil') are slowly ending.
The Labour party no longer exists in the form that Kier Hardie would recognise, nor the form that my grandparents would either.
It's up to the people of the North East to pull themselves out of recession and stop this reliance on the South. 53% of North East GDP is public sector, could the money earmarked for the hospital not have been used for Corus or inwards investment?
No? That's because it's just easier for Labour to keep building things we don't need using money we don't have.

Nice to see the first communication from our new MP is a cheap and simple attack on the 'other guys'. I do not wish to hear your opinion on what other people have done. I want to know what you are doing? So tell me Mr Cunningham, what would you do instead? How will you both pay for the hospital and make sure that we are not still paying for it when it has come to end of its useful life?

I'm glad that debate is being stimulated....it is offensive to the people of the North to suggest that we rely on the South. Our people and area remain a hot house of industry and hard work and deserve the rewards of their labour. This new MP knows of the trauma ahead for areas like the Tees Valley and the North East. We will bear the brunt of the cuts as has already been demonstrated. The next few months and years will prove we are an easy target for right wing Tory Governments - this latest one propped by the LibDems who many voted wanted change. They got it but not the kind they wanted - frozen child benefit, frozen grants to industry, cuts in health and council service budgets and the axe taken to our new hospital.

53% of North East GDP is public sector - You can't seriously be saying that the North East is paying for itself?
In addition I believe the whole economic output of the North East is only around 3% of national GDP, so where is the money for the hospitals and schools coming from? It isn't from the horny handed sons of toil you believe exist in our communities is it?
Going back to your initial post, I'm glad the coalition is taking the action it is taking as another 4 years of Labour would have taken the UK into the abyss - we'd be Greece but with crap weather.
Socialists think that you can rob Peter to pay Paul forever... but you can't.
Good luck with your political career.
