I have just been advised by the above site that you are one of those constituents who have expressed an interest in hearing from me from time to time on matters of importance, either at Westminster or in North West Leicestershire.
One issue cropped up in a debate yesterday evening related to the Electoral Registration Bill - which is (amongst other things) trying to tackle electoral fraud and to reduce the level of adults in the UK not on the electoral roll (estimated at c 4 million).
The government are opposed to a House of Lords suggestion that registration should be individual (one form per person) and not (as at present) one per household filled in by the 'head of household'.
The government accept the Lords idea might tighten up on fraud but they believe it could nevertheless be a barrier to registration for some people and the 4 million figure might even increase.
Whilst this is not a major problem in NWL where we (apparently) have a high level of registration and a higher than average inclination to vote (highest in the UK in the 1992 General Election, 2nd highest in England in 1997), what do you think?
