£40 million investment in Chilton

Posted by Phil Wilson, MP for Sedgefield, at 13:44, Monday 8 February:

Biomass plant at Chilton Mill to provide cheap energy for town

Dalkia have started work on building a £40 million bio-ass plant at Chilton Mill which will start power generation in early 2011. The plant is good news for Chilton because:

- Create 50 jobs during construction - A further 17 jobs on-site and additional jobs in supporting industry - Provide cheap hot water and electricity for Chilton - Improve the environment by reducing CO2 emission, helping Chilton do its bit against Climate Change - By burning waste wood it will prevent 120,000 tonnes of material ending up in landfill sites - The generation plant will make Chilton a centre of excellence for green technology

David Kidney MP, Under Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change visited the Dalkia site with local MP Phil Wilson and local representatives in January to mark the start of construction.

Phil Wilson MP said: “The £40 million investment is good news for Chilton, because the power plant under construction will offer cheap energy for Chilton. Labour is encouraging renewable energy schemes like the one in Chilton, because it will help in the fight against climate change while helping local people with their fuel bills. I believe this is the way forward. We all know the need to tackle Climate Change, but it is only right that local people feel the benefits here and now through cheaper energy bills.

I have been working alongside your Labour County Councillors and Labour town council to secure this opportunity for Chilton because they know the benefits it offers Chilton.”
