Mobile home fuel poverty

Posted by Mark Todd, MP for South Derbyshire, at 10:59, Thu 14 January 2010:

Dear all

For the past few years, I have been trying to help mobile home residents who face huge fuel bills. I held meetings in Hartshorne and Coton-in-the-Elms, which were attended by the charity National Energy Action, to talk about new heating systems and other ways through which energy costs can be cut. With the current freezing conditions everyone is concerned about high fuel bills but for mobile home owners, the problem is exacerbated by the fact that they often do not get a choice of energy suppliers - they have no mains gas and many rely on oil or bottled gas. Their homes are also often inefficient to heat and poorly insulated. Earlier this month, I had a chance to bring up this issue in Parliament during a debate. I told Parliamentary Under Secretary David Kidney that the Government has so far done very little to assist these people. The minister then revealed that in response to my pressure, the department has agreed that it wants to pilot some schemes for delivering greater energy efficiency measures to mobile homes. This is welcome news. I only wish it had come sooner. I will now seek further details on what is planned based on the practical experience of South Derbyshire residents. The last thing we will need is some pilot projects that don't work here. I would appreciate your thoughts on these issues. My email address is markwtodd@btconnect.com.
