Merry Christmas

‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.’
As we approach an election year, you would be forgiven for thinking that these words were lifted from a party manifesto. They are of course from St Luke’s gospel, and hold out the hope which no politician could go near to promising or fulfilling.
Christmas is a good time to be with family and friends and to be generous with one another. It can also be a difficult time with strained family relationships, financial pressures and missing loved ones.
It is probably invidious to single out one person, but I will be particularly remembering Zina Petty who died this month. Zina was a much loved member of our community. Each year Zina organised an excellent St Monicas’ Christmas tea party for the elderly, disabled and housebound. Together with a dedicated band of volunteers she provided gifts, food and entertainment and her overwhelming care for others. Zina will be much missed but we can carry on her great example of service and compassion, which I have had the privilege of seeing displayed by many constituents and local voluntary groups.
At this time, I send my best wishes to my constituents who have different celebrations such as Chanukah, Al Hijira or other family celebrations. One of the primary schoolchildren who entered my Christmas Card design competition summed up what the festivities are about for me and many others in the constituency when she wrote – ‘Christmas is Christ’. With cynicism and mistrust pervading public life, Jesus Christ’s example of humble service and sacrifice and words that found no lies or deceit is timely. More words from St. Luke provide the greatest manifesto promise fulfilled –
‘Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you: he is Christ the Lord’ Finally I wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
With best wishes

your time would be better spent answering queries, rather than obvious self promotion

Nice Xmas message although I have a point to make.
Maybe if we stop looking after people that shouldn't be here, and take advantage of a relaxed immigration system we wouldn't have to depend on charities and volunteers look after our elderly war survivors that fought for our country and spent their lives contributing to this country only for Labour to give it all away.
It breaks my heart how overwhelmed our NHS and public services are with the sheer number of people using it and the lack of people putting into it. Also the amount of wastage and bonuses being paid out to the pen pushers.
Clearly MP's don't live in the real world and do not understand Joe publics frustrations.
Because of Labour many Brits will not have a very good Xmas. I'm ashamed to be British. Everything is about budgets and profits, not about the people!
Everyone I speak with has the same opinion. And we all feel there is no point in complaining any more as our opinion is ignored. We don't even get a referendum on important matters.
God help us because the it seems government won't.
