Hebrides Range - Uist

Posted by Angus MacNeil, MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, at 15:10, Tue 7 July 2009:

The recent announcement from the Ministry of Defence, to scale-down the Hebrides Range in Uist, is certainly a major blow for our islands. All agencies must come together and work in unison to maintain these jobs. As I have previously said, 120 jobs may sound like a small amount in London terms but in the terms of the people and the economy of the Uists is equivalent to thousands. Immediately following the MOD announcement, I called for an emergency House of Commons debate, on the future of a missile testing range this request however, was denied. I have tabled a series of parliamentary questions at Westminster to try to unravel the reason for this decision and I am pleased to see a task force has been set up locally to fight against these proposed job cuts.
