Holidays

Hello again,
Thanks for all your posts and emails on the DNA database. Whilst not everyone agreed on whether we should have one or not, a general theme was that if we do have it then it shouldn't be discriminatory. Either everyone should be on it or only those who have been convicted of a crime - certainly not those who haven't. I have now submitted my views to the consultation.
So onto the next topic. With all the sunny weather around I thought I would choose a happier theme - holidays!! I met with a group concerned by the changes to the furnished holiday lettings law in the budget. It got me thinking about the impact of the recession on holidays and the knock on affect on the economy.
So have you had to change your holiday plans? Do you think that maybe with more people supposedly holidaying in the UK this year that it might actually be a boost for the UK economy?
With this heatwave maybe we don't need to go anywhere else (!) but I am interested to know how this recession affects peoples holidaying habits.
Mark
P.S. If any of you have good book recommendations for summer reading let me know.

Hiya Mark! Because of being ill and trying to save money I'm not going on holiday this year, in fact I haven't been on holiday since 2006. Its a shame there aren't more respite care places for the disabled, social services sure don't make it easy to get the help people need, but I guess that's another issue!
If I were going on holiday I'd love to go to Spain for great weather or Italy for great food! However I think you're right, with this great weather we don't need to go abroad. I originally come from the west country, which is a lovely place to visit. My favourite place is bude, with lots of sun, sea, surf and ... shopping!! and of course you just have to have a traditional Devonshire cream tea!
A lot of newspapers have cheap holidays in them if you collect the tokens. And for flights comparing internet prices can save a fortune.
As for books Id recommend author Alice Seabold, deep, dark but different!! Or if you're into chick lit, sophie kinsellas book are fun easy reads.

We'd loves to go back to Tobago one of our favoured destinations but with 4 of us it's now a tad too pricey so we are staying at home. Also the best times to go are not during school holidays.
Thing is, if "everyone" stays in the UK to save money the laws of supply and demand will push costs up and you may not save much anyhow. On the weather the problem with the UK is that you are not guaranteed the weather so you end up packing wet/hot/warm clothes, indoor things, outdoor things. And being a small island with too many people, nice places get overcrowded very quickly.
(On a tangential note, how about VAT on second/holiday homes, they are a luxury after all?)

Hi Mark
Having become redundent I not going on holiday just at the moment. It's obviouse from our relations who live in France's reports that not many Brits are going to Brittany this year.
A good read for me is Dick Francis noval Silk.
