Road Fuel Duty
Posted by Angus MacNeil, MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, at 14:32, Thu 4 June 2009:
In this year’s budget, the Government raised fuel duty tax to 54.19 pence per litre not including VAT. I am working hard with my colleagues here to find ways to relieve the hardships of the families and businesses of the Western Isles. My colleague Stewart Hosie MP proposed an amendment to the finance bill that would have brought forth a Fuel Duty Tax Regulator that would have frozen fuel duty once the price of oil rose above a predetermined level. This amendment would have helped thousands of families across the Western Isles but it was defeated by the government.
I would appreciate your thoughts on what actions should be taken now to address this most serious of issues.

This may sound naive but exactly why is fuel more expensive on the islands? If duty is the same across the UK , and the profit allowed on fuel as a percentage is the same , where and by whom is the increase applied? If the duty is not at fault who is ? Perhaps we should be informed as to the justification of the levy if it is transport or supply companies that are imposing it , shouldn't they be under scrutiny?

Put a stop to all the "Green Tax" nonsense. It seems to me that it is part of a scam to extract more money from us motorists. I think there is as much chance of "green taxes" being spent on "green projects" as there is "road tax" being spent on the roads!!
Make green tax optional. Those who are worried about environmental issues should be able to opt to pay more for for them, and those, like myself who think it is largely a "scam" can opt out and have more of our own money to spend as we please. In rural places we need cars to get around. If the fuel is £1 or £5 it makes no difference to the need to use your car to get around. All it does is take more of the hard earned money out of our pockets and keeps a large proportion of the population reliant on Government handouts just to survive.
I know that it wouldn't be popular among the media and the people with money to spare but a way to help this situation is to build more nuclear power stations, shut down the coal etc fired power stations and drop the tax on fuel, both for driving and heating. It would save money, "save" the environment, and enable us not to have to choose between using our cars or eating!
