MPs expenses
Posted by Sarah Teather, MP for Brent East, at 19:13, Tue 12 May 2009:
On my way into Parliament each morning, many local people have been stopping me on the bus or the tube to talk about the scandal on MPs expenses. There have been some absolutely outrageous stories of abuse.
I wanted to reassure you that I do not, and have never claimed money for a second home, or any of the trappings that go with it. I have one home, and it is in Willesden Green.
I feel very angry about the way some MPs have been fiddling the system. I thought you might be interested to read the article I have written for the Guardian about this today. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/may/12/mps-expenses
For some time now, I have been campaigning against the worst excesses of the expense system. Earlier this year I tabled a motion in Parliament calling for second home allowances for London MPs to be abolished altogether. I also strongly opposed the Labour government’s plans to make MPs exempt from the Freedom of Information Act.
If you have any further questions, or if there are any problems that I can help with as your local MP, please do get in touch.
Best wishes
Sarah

Thanks for all your good work Sarah. I haven't been taking part in Politics and Government much but you can count on me to for support! I received the flier on Saturday and saw that you had claimed nothing while your collegue claimed 60,000!! Outrageous!!

Sarah I have lost faith in politicians a long time ago with corporate lobbying, corruption you name it, but you have instilled some hope in me by always replying to my emails and taking onboard my issues where best you can you get much kudos for that. But pray tell me why is it that once some of your ostentatiously creative peers get caught and offer a public appology, nothing else much comes of it?
Now that the captain of this ship is pushing hard to make MPs exempt from freedom of information, your peers are only going to do it again and again and again its Outrageous!

Hi Sarah, its a shame that idealistic people in politics have been drowned out, in all the hub bub.
The problem with the current government is that they have come to believe that they were born to rule.
I really hope that the LBs will benefit, as they do come out better than the others.
But honestly I have long felt that the LBs are not getting their message out. Your party has to get more media savvy, more dynamic. You also need to speak to the working classes more, or you haven't got a cat in hell's chance of getting into office.
All the best.
