I am already in dialogue with your office over the issue of ensuring all vital information is circulated in large print or audio to persons with visual difficulties. This should be an umbrella policy covering financial institutions, council and tax offices and food and medicine labelling. Too much space on packaging is given to advertising, leaving only a tiny space for ingredients, cooking instructions and directions for storage. Credit card statements are merely photocopied onto larger sheets of paper and are clumsy and inadequate. Leaflets sent with enlarged statements still have the message if you require this in large print, audio or Braille ring... surely this is worse than sending everything in small print because the database is aware that this client requires a diferent format -this gains them my double "muppet award!" Remember "if we could read it, we wouldn't need it, please continue to read this message with your eyes closed." Despite assurances neither my blind colleague nor myself received Council tax notification or info. about the new acct. details in large print . Since I telephoned them the new Cheshire West And Chester Council have sent a large form with slightly larger print, requesting my permission to outsource the job to the RNIB. Why are they not able to increase the print size on their computers in house or at least use the local service-Vision Support,Chester from whom I get Alliance and Leicester bank statements? As a responsible citizen I have rung up for the bank acct. details and used them, but for some reason the money had not arrived and a previous phone payment has vanished. Apparently the whole of the council database has become overloaded and there are a lot of teething problems with sighted customers so what chance do we have?! (No one I have spoken to wanted to lose Vale Royal Borough Council as at least they were au fait with local issues and had a reasonable environmental record and were fore runners in some areas e.g. the Agenda 21 consultations, which seem to have been forgotten despite a great deal of time and effort invested by many volunteers without expense accts.) Visually impaired people in this area have very little support compared to some post code areas. How do we get information and then how do we act on it if we do not have access to transport? Or the internet for which the equipment and software is overpriced? Even the hospital (VIN)despite being brilliant in many ways, had to be reminded to mark the edges of the steps from the bus stop. (Unfortunately walking to the hospital is dangerous as there is a very narrow pavement on one side of the rail bridge and no means of crossing over a very busy road on this approach.)Further points can be discussed on this matter with my colleague Mr JB Owens of Moss Terrace who has been "managing" without support and without adequate funding for several years. Thank you for this opportunity to raise these issues. Who is the European candidate?
