Heathrow Third Runway
Posted by Stephen Hammond, MP for Wimbledon, at 16:07, Mon 9 February 2009:
I am completely opposed to the building of a Third runway. there will be a significant increase in noise and decrease in quality of life for Wimbledon. However, as importantly, it means the UK will breach its climate change commitments and there will be an increase in NOx emissions. Finally the economic case has not been made.

Good! This is probably a vote decider for me ( a congenital 'floater')

I support this proposal by Stephen Hammond MP to oppose the building of a 3rd runway at LHR (as a resident near Wimbledon).

Very sensible. I have never voted Tory in my life but at least this bloke does his job.

Mr. Hammond's position on the Gaza massacre was totally underwhelming - but this is something I can get behind him on.

Great! This message concisely reflects exactly the views I expressed to Stephen Hammond MP in a letter, to which he also replied immediately. I have never voted Tory in my life - but I am definitely voting for Stephen Hammond at the next election, on the basis of his publicly stated views on this issue. Fantastic to see an MP with some common sense for once! Thank you.

Apparently the plan involves allowing only 'low noise, fuel efficient planes' to land at Heathrow. It wouldn't surprise me if that requirement got relaxed eventually, for economic reasons, as operators decide to schedule flights elsewhere, ( should these requirements really be applied ).
It wouldn't surprise me therefore if the third runway resulted in widespread noise pollution. I believe it represents an unimaginative, short sighted attempt to stimulate the economy.
