Climate Change Bill
Posted by Roger Berry, MP for Kingswood, at 13:13, Mon 24 November 2008:
Along with many colleagues, I pressed very hard for the initial 2050 target of 60% cuts in carbon emissions to be increased to 80%, and for international aviation and shipping to be included in these targets. I am delighted that the Government accepted the amendments to this effect during the final stages of the Bill.
The Bill will make the UK the first country in the world to have a legally binding long term framework to cut greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to the above, and amongst many other provisions, a new system of carbon budgets will be set alongside the next budget to ensure that we meet our targets.
I am very pleased that environmentalists have enthusiastically welcomed this Bill. For example, the Executive Director of Friends of the Earth said: “The world’s first climate change law will also be a world class climate change law. People from right around the UK demanded a strong law. The Government have listened.”

This is very welcome news indeed. Many thanks for all your efforts.
Let's hope this country sets an example to the rest of the world.

I'm not convinced at all about this legislation. MPs can legislate all they want but if the target is unachievable (and I believe it is unachievable) it is all for nothing.
You might as well have gone all the way and voted for a 100% reduction.
