A406 - legacy potential?
Posted by David Burrowes, MP for Enfield, Southgate, at 17:29, Wed 15 October 2008:
I was pleased to have meetings with reputedly the 2 most influential men in London – Mayor Boris Johnson and Deputy Mayor Sir Simon Milton. I was trying to make sure their influence is focused upon the North Circular Road and New Southgate which have suffered from such neglect over the years. I am optimistic that progress will be made to regenerate this needy area of my constituency. Whilst the economic climate does not lend itself to property development, there can be no more delay in redeveloping the blighted properties along the A406. The Mayor may well be looking at the legacy from the Olympics but I would hope that he could in time look back on a regenerated A406 area with pride.

Boris has written that he is in favour of infrastructure projects as part of the way through the recession, so this could at last be the time to get this awful road sorted out.

Firstly thank you to continue with this issue, much appreciated.
I felt that you have not really given us a feel of the response from Bojo and his Deputy.
Were they at least understanding of the problem and the need for change? Most of the North circular from The East end to Rayners Lane Gyratory is dual or tripple lane. Between Tescos and Palmers green it is in effect single lane.

The state of the A406 between tesco and palmers green/arnos grove is a discrace. It should have been tackled a long time ago. It also poses significant risk to children attending broomfield school and pedestrians in the area.
One of Mayor Boris's priorities should be to deal with the shamefull state of the properties lining this sectioon of the 406 by redevelopomg the whole area.
It is more like a getto in a shanty town than a suburb of london and it is clear that it is already attracting the less honorable sections of society.

Thank you for your comments.
In response to Adrian's point, Boris Johnson and Sir Simon Milton were positive about the need for regeneration of the area and working with Enfield Council to come up with a good property development scheme. The road improvement is limited to Ken Livingstone's scheme which has been approved. There will not be grade separations or flyovers like other parts of the A406.
In response to D. Licheri, I agree that the area is a disgrace and I described it to Boris as a slum and promised to continue highlighting the lack of attention up to the Olympics. I am optimistic that at last the blighted properties will be prioritised by TFL and Enfiel Council.
