Save our Parks Police

Posted by Lynne Featherstone, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, at 13:22, Tue 8 July 2008:

You may have heard about Haringey Council's penny-pinching decision to cut our Parks Police service, making ten police constables and three police dogs redundant.

Crime and fear of crime in parks is a very real issue. With the warmer weather many of us are spending more time outdoors - and we want to feel safe as we do it. But in a misguided attempt to save money Labour-run Haringey council will soon be taking away this much loved service.

I strongly believe there is another way.

My Liberal Democrat colleagues on Haringey council have put together a plan for keeping our existing Parks Police service. By cutting down on waste and inefficiency we would also be able to have dedicated park wardens.

But that isn't all that is needed. A year ago I pointed out that crazily the Parks Police and the Met Police cannot talk to each other over their radios - as they are not compatible. If we are to make our parks safe then we need our Parks Police teams working closely with local Police. I have been working with my councillor colleagues to make sure that this happens - but of course without a Parks Police service a vital piece of this jigsaw is missing.

If you would like to help our campaign for more Parks Police there are two very simple things you can do straight away from the comfort of your computer:

1. Sign the petition to save our Parks Police at http://campaigns.libdems.org.uk/parkspolice 2. Forward this email to any of the people in your address book who live locally suggesting they do the same.

All the best and hope you are enjoying the hot weather.
