I voted against 42 days

Posted by Willie Rennie, MP for Dunfermline and West Fife, at 09:41, Mon 16 June 2008:

Last week I voted against the government's proposals for the detention without charge period to be extended to 42 days which I believe is excessive and not required. I fear the government is simply responding to the need to be seen to be doing something about terrorism. I don't believe this will make us any safer and in fact could make the situation worse.

Aircraft Carriers The Government has finally given the go ahead to the construction of two aircraft carriers at Rosyth Dockyard. The pressure that I and others exerted on the Government not to delay seems to have paid off. That's good news. I am now working with Babcock, Scottish Enterprise and Fife Council to make sure that local people are given every opportunity to seek employment at the yard and that we use the contract as a platform to create more and long lasting employment and business opportunities.

Nuclear submarines I have been pressing the Government to remove the seven redundant nuclear submarines from Rosyth Dockyard. I secured a debate in Parliament on the subject during which I asked Defence Minister, Derek Twigg, to transfer the subs to Devonport Dockyard for dismantling. The Minister didn't set out a plan or timetable for dealing with the submarines so I will continue to press for action.

Israel and Palestine I went on a five day fact finding visit to Israel and Palestine. I was disturbed with what I found and pessimistic about the chances for peace in the near future. To read more about my visit please log on to www.dunfermlinelibdems.org.uk
