Our Post Offices

Posted by Lynne Featherstone, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, at 16:27, Thu 15 May 2008:

By now you should have heard the terrible news that this Government is determined to ride roughshod over the opinions of experts, postmen, MPs such as myself and many thousands of ordinary people (in fact the views of 99.9% of people who contacted me) and will go ahead and close 7 post offices in our area. In fact across the whole of London the Government has only granted a reprieve to 7 of the 162 Post Offices it originally wanted to close.

This makes me really angry. I mean what is the point of asking a question if, when you get the answer back so emphatically no - when thousands and thousands of people get in touch to tell you what a stupid idea it is, you go ahead and do it anyway? Considering how much disrespect this shows to local people it's no wonder Labour are at their lowest opinion poll rating ever.

I'm determined not to give up the fight, and I am determined to make this Government listen to us. But with Labour ministers so determined to ignore us we are going to have to look to persuade the Council and Mayor to step in to run Post Offices.

So let us not lose heart! This is not over yet.

The best thing we can do now is collect more petition signatures. Please email 5 or 6 local friends and ask them to take a few moments to sign at http://ourcampaign.org.uk/haringeypostoffices. Once we have got a few hundred more signatures, I will present it to both the Council and the new Mayor and demand action.

All the best and hope to see you soon,

Lynne,
