Thank you to all those who have signed up to this service.
This term I started work as part of the select committee considering the arguments for and against The Crossrail Bill.
I was very flattered to be asked to be a member of this committee, and am one of just three Conservative MPs sitting on it. We have had an intense four weeks listening and analysing the arguments and issues, but for the record, I can assure you, it has not affected my constituency duties. Nor will it stop me turning up for, and taking part in, debates in the House of Commons.
The Bill, should it go through, will enable the construction, maintenance and operation of Crossrail, a new east-west rail link in central London. Crossrail will operate 24 trains an hour at peak times in both directions, carrying nearly 200 million passengers a year, and in turn that would relieve congestion and overcrowding as well as improving access to both Heathrow and Stansted airports.
You might know that I have also been working with Sally Keeble, my Labour counterpart in Northampton North, to see whether there is some role Northampton can play in the hosting of the Olympic Games. Watch this space.
The last week has been particularly important in Parliament, with votes on whether to impose a blanket ban on smoking in public places, whether to accept the Lords amendment on the issue of incitement to religious hatred and further votes on ID cards. I am sure you are all aware of my position on these votes, as every one is recorded on this website.
I will again update you during the next Parliamentary Term. However, I am sure you are all aware that I am readily contactable through my Constituency Office if you have any further questions or contributions to make and will readily respond to any query you may have.
Thank you again for signing up to this service.
Regards
Brian Binley
