Update from your MP: Post Offices, local visits and local elections
Posted by James Duddridge, MP for Rochford and Southend East, at 08:05, Tue 15 April 2008:
Hello there,
As you are signed up on the 'Hear From Your MP' website I thought you might be interested to know what I’ve been doing recently in and about town.
One of the big issues of the past few weeks has been Post Offices and their potential closure. With closures planned around the country, the list of branches under threat in Southend and Rochford isn’t due out until next month, but that doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels. I joined local volunteers at No 10 Downing Street as they presented a petition for the Prime Minister with over 1,000 signatures on it, demonstrating the strength of feeling locally about the importance of our branches for the community.
I’ve made some very interesting visits in the past few weeks too. At Southend Credit Union in York Road I learned about the financial services they provide for residents, especially those who have difficulty getting access to things like loans and saving plans otherwise. At Essex University I was very interested to see the university getting embedded into its new campus, in particular the way it is working in the community such as through its ‘business hub’ and its dental lab. In Rochford I went along to a great open day for the St John’s Ambulance, where I met some of the committed volunteers and had the opportunity to thank them for their hard work.
In a few weeks we do, of course, have local elections due for Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and Rochford District Council. I’ve been out and about supporting the Conservative candidates and will continue to do so in the run up to election day.
If you want to know more about any of the things I’ve mentioned, or what else I’ve been doing, there’s more on my website at www.jamesduddridge.com or you can give me a ring on 01702 616 135.
Yours,
James
PS. Don’t forget that you can vote for your local councillors on May 1st at your nearest polling station, which will be open from 7am to 10pm.
