Education (Children with autism) Bill
Posted by Lee Scott, MP for Ilford North, at 11:30, Wed 5 December 2007:
Early in the New Year it is my intention under the 10 minute Rule procedure to present the Education (Children with autism) Bill.
This will raise the issues on the provision of the education and training of children with autism and aspergers; and for connected purposes.
The questions surrounding the provision of special educational needs teaching are in my view very important. I would like to have your views on this issue.

I do not know very much about this particular subject, but what I do know is that education on a 1 to 1 basis is very good, but the problem in many cases is that where close attachments are broken, this can have devastating effects. As a consequence, it boils down to what is the lesser of two evils.

As a teacher, I am wholly in favour of any measures that will improve the educational facilities available to individuals with special educational needs, whatever they may be. As long as this is done on the back of solid research, it should be beneficial for all involved.
The school environment, with its one-size-fits-all approach (no matter how much 'individualised learning plans' are touted about), simply is not suitable for everyone. Education provision needs to get more creative.
