Thank you for posting your comments on issues that are important to you. This website enables me as Member of Parliament for Taunton constituency to let you know what I have been doing both in Parliament and locally for the benefit of the area and I list below some of the issues I have addressed.
Policing in Somerset
I am passionate about maintaining law and order for Somerset and in particular for my constituents in Taunton. I have had many discussions about local policing with key figures in the Avon and Somerset Constabulary and hosted a debate in Parliament about policing in the area and would be happy to share this with you. Flood Issues
The Levels are a uniquely beautiful area of Somerset for both residents and visitors. These areas are vulnerable to flooding and I have had a consultation with the Environment Agency to discuss this serious issue and will be talking to members of one of the flood groups to discuss their concerns.
Traffic Congestion
Traffic congestion in towns is becoming a serious matter and Taunton in particular suffers more than most towns due to the layout and age of the buildings which were erected well before the advent of the motor car. This needs to be urgently addressed. I have raised this in the House of Commons. If you would like a copy of this document please contact my Taunton office. The new park and ride scheme has been provided to help alleviate some of the congestion. Also other means of transport should be looked at. I have had discussions with the local cycling groups and will be present at the inauguration of the new cycle path in April 2006.
Green Issues
I am committed to green issues and attend the local environmental groups’ forum to talk about these in more depth. I partake in the parliamentary debating group to address the serious topic of Climate Change. I have also been appointed as one of the Liberal Democrats ‘Shadow Green Ministers’ in Parliament who meet regularly to push for a range of environmental policies including greater use of renewable energy sources.
