Abortion Time Limits
Posted by Mark Oaten, MP for Winchester, at 14:25, Mon 19 November 2007:
A debate which has recieved growing attention in recent months concerns the time limit on abortions. This is a contentious issue which raises passionate responses from all sides and I feel what is needed is a full public inquiry into this matter. This would allow abortion limits, which have not been reviewed for some time, to be considered in light of scientific advancements.
I would be interested to hear constituents views on this matter and how you feel it is best to proceed.

I think that the time limit on abortion should be just below the date after which a foetus would be viable. For example as the law stands at the moment the current limit is 24 weeks (I believe) although with recent advancements in medicine, if a foetus would be viable after less than 24 weeks, the date up to which abortions can be had should fall in line with this (so for example say a foetus born at 20 weeks would be viable, the last date for abortion should be 19 weeks).
As I am not sure of the medical facts I cannot comment further, but I think that the law should prevent possibly viable foetuses from being terminated.

Mark, thanks for bringing this to the attention of your constituents in this way.
Hopefully I'm not the only person reading this, who feels it is an important issue but does not know enough about the subject to have an informed opinion. May I suggest to any others wishing to research the subject a little to make their minds up that they refer to this website and in particular the articles in the Bibliography which have an enormous amount of information on the subject.

I don't really feel qualified respond on this subject. Its very emotive, and I support you Mark in your call for a public inquiry into it. Just wanted to add my thanks for you raising the issue in such a way.
