The housing debate
Posted by Jeremy Hunt, MP for South West Surrey, at 10:04, Tue 9 October 2007:
One of the main concerns raised with me most regularly at the moment is overdevelopment and 'garden grabbing' in South West Surrey. Although I understand that too much 'garden grabbing' can threaten the character of small communities, I am not against all development because we desperately need more affordable homes to help young people onto the housing ladder. The key thing is to stop the domino effect, where one house gets permission to develop its land and the whole street then tries to follow suit. I think the way to strike the balance is to give local people a say in where new homes are located but I would be keen to hear from constituents how they think the problem can be resolved in our area. I shall be holding public meetings on this topic in Haslemere (7pm Hasleway Centre) on November 8th and in Godalming (7pm The Octagon) on November 15th so would urge people to come and share their concerns and help find a sustainable solution.
