Hello and thank you for signing up to this service for updates on my work for you as the MP for West Ham. The value of this service as a forum for discussion about issues of concern to our area will increase if more people sign up so please do encourage your friends and family to join.
If there’s ever anything I can do to help you or you would like to raise any points with me please get in touch by emailing brownl@parliament.uk, by phoning 020 7219 6999, or by attending one of my regular advice surgeries.
2006 promises to be an eventful year. There are several important issues for us all to debate and decide upon in parliament which will affect the quality of life for many here in West Ham. One of the most imminent is whether smoking should be banned in all pubs and clubs. In the next few weeks MPs will have a free vote on this in the House of Commons. We will also be debating how best to reform education services. I know many people have strong views on these subjects and I’d like to know what you think so please do get in touch.
This month I have also been focusing on the campaign for Newham to be reclassified as an Inner London borough. By being classified as an outer London borough, it is estimated that Newham receives between £60 and £70 million less in central Government funding than many of its neighbours including Greenwich and Tower Hamlets. This arbitrary geographical boundary is based on historic and not current administrative boundaries. As you will have seen in our local papers, I have already lobbied several Government ministers on this issue and this week myself and Stephen Timms MP met with Gordon Brown directly to press our case on this matter. I’ll update this site with our progress on this vital issue for the future of our borough.
