An update before recess

Posted by Brian Binley, MP for Northampton South, at 13:46, Wed 11 July 2007:

Thanks to all who have followed my work in parliament through this Website.

First of all I would like to update all of you on my efforts to help small and medium-sized businesses in Northampton and throughout the country. As many of you may know, one of the things I wanted to achieve in Parliament was to increase the help and support for business, which is the lifeblood of our economy.

The Conservative Parliamentary Enterprise Group campaigns to foster a small business-friendly environment in the UK by reducing burdensome regulations and establishing an infrastructure to help small businesses in the modern world. I was asked to Chair this group last year and I am pleased to say that we are gaining a bigger and better voice in parliament all the time.

I also continue to sit on the Trade and Industry Select Committee. Among the topics we have discussed on the Committee this year are trade links with the new EU accession countries, local energy and the problems facing the Post Office network.

On the issue of Post Offices I have again questioned Ministers as to why we are shutting down sub-post offices all over the country instead of allowing them more opportunities to grow as individual businesses. It is my belief that there is ample scope for sub-post masters to develop additional services and eventually run profit making organisations. Instead I have been distressed to see more and more services taken away from them. It is the an issue I continue to pursue.

Let me finish by saying that if you wish to contact my office on any issue, please do not hesitate to so.
