Smoking Ban
Posted by Ann Keen, MP for Brentford and Isleworth, at 11:37, Thu 28 June 2007:
As a former nurse and long-time campaigner on health and cancer issues I am pleased that the ban on smoking in enclosed spaces, introduced by this government, will come into effect on July 1st.
From then on smoking in enclosed and work spaces will be illegal, which will ensure a healthier environment for non-smokers and it is exected that many thousands of smokers will quit the habit. This can only be to the benefit of the nation's health.

Yes, this is good news for health. I hope you will continue to be able to work for our health by stopping the government's plans to abolish the flight path rotation over Hounslow; lack of sleep and stress are also bad for health.
Thanks, Graham

I dislike statements which begin "As a nurse ..", "As a mother ..", "As a Londoner .." etc. Is this not the lowest level of political debate? I have lost count of the number of times I have read statements by Ann Keen which start "As a nurse ..".
Are Nurses all of one opinion? Are all Londoners of the same opinion? Of course not. Therefore phrases like "As a nurse .. " tells us nothing.
If people have reasons for approving or disapproving of policies then they should give them. Simply saying "As an X.." is just a lazy alternative to giving a proper explanation.
Here is a challenge for Ann Keen: if you are a candidate in the next general election write election material that doesn't use the phrase "As a nurse" anywhere.
P.S.1. Some nurses of my acquaintance are chain smokers.
P.S.2. I think that the smoking ban is great because pubs will be healthier places and my clothes won't stink of smoke as a result of having a couple of pints.
