Update from Willie Rennie
Posted by Willie Rennie, MP for Dunfermline and West Fife, at 18:35, Mon 25 June 2007:
It's been a busy week. Last Monday I questioned the Defence Secretary on Rosyth Dockyard. On Tuesday I questioned him again on the Iranian hostages. On Wednesday I made a speech on Europe and on Thursday a speech on the armed forces. After two weeks away from the constituency I returned to a full diary of meetings including with Oceaneering at Rosyth and surgeries in Rosyth, Inverkeithing, Kingseat and Crombie.
This week we will have Tony Blair's last Question Time followed by Gordon Brown's takeover. I'd appreciate your views on whether Gordon Brown should call an immediate General Election as he has only been elected by the Labour Party and not the country.

Hi Willie,
Should Gordon Brown call a General Election? Hmm. What are the precedents? When Thatcher left was there a General Election?
Either way, I am not a supporter of Gordon Brown. I feel his viewpoints on the Budget, Violent Crime Prevention Act, ID cards and other matters are far too inflamatory.

I don't believe there is a precedent for an election under these circumstances but I do recall at the Margaret Thatcher/John Major handover there was signficant disatisfaction with the process. As election campaigns are increasingly presidential in style I believe that it is important that an election is held.

Hello Willie,
While some folk stick to the same party whatever, others (when it comes to elections) take in a variety of factors: policies, track record and personalities etc. Perhaps this last is the most important for many (and I include in personality character, personal qualities such as genuineness and so on). At the end of the day it is a particular party which is voted in and if there is a change of leader we have to accept that whether we like it or not.
Best wishes,
Alasdair Campbell
