Email from Jo Swinson MP
Posted by Jo Swinson, MP for East Dunbartonshire, at 23:20, Thu 26 January 2006:
It’s been a busy start to 2006. This week I was lucky to secure my 2nd question to the Prime Minister, and took the opportunity to question him about violence against women. Shockingly, 45% of women in the UK experience domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking at some point in their lives http://www.joswinson.org.uk/news/246.html.
Since the start of the year in Parliament I have also raised the issue of humane treatment for children of asylum seekers http://www.joswinson.org.uk/news/247.html, the problems with the Child Support Agency http://www.joswinson.org.uk/news/243.html and trade rules making it difficult to tackle AIDS in developing countries http://www.joswinson.org.uk/news/244.html.
In the constituency I am keeping the pressure on the Health Board on what their new plans for the city will mean for local health services, having met with the new Director of Rehabilitation Services and representatives from the Ambulance Service. At a meeting with Marks & Spencer managers I impressed upon them the desirability of finding a location in Bishopbriggs centre, to add to the vibrancy of the town. I hope all options can be thoroughly explored.
Local businesses are vital to the economic health of East Dunbartonshire, so I was delighted that the Computer Users Information Service, a successful business in Milngavie, has achieved the Investors in People award http://www.joswinson.org.uk/news/238.html and also to be able to visit Guala Closures (Daniel Montgomery Ltd) in Kirkintilloch. However the news that both B&Q and Harper Collins have had to let staff go is obviously disappointing and I am continuing communication with both the companies and unions on this.
Of course it’s also busy in the Liberal Democrats. We all wish Charles Kennedy well http://www.joswinson.org.uk/news/239.html and look forward to welcoming whoever is our new leader on 2nd March. I’m supporting Ming Campbell to be the next Lib Dem leader http://www.joswinson.org.uk/news/237.html.
As ever, do get in touch with views or comments, and if I can help you in any way as your MP.
Kind regards
Jo Swinson
