A New Deal for Carers
Posted by Ashok Kumar, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, at 09:48, Fri 30 March 2007:
I recently had a letter published in the Evening Gazette, bringing to readers’ attention the new support package introduced by the Government for carers. I have copied this letter below to update you on this important issue:
Many readers may not have heard about the recent introduction of a ‘New Deal’ for Carers by the Government.
I regularly meet constituents who take care for loved ones unable to cope by themselves. Through their support and devotion they keep families together, taking on a precious role that allows a friend or family member to stay at home and live with the dignity, independence and security that is so easily taken for granted. I can only express my great admiration for these selfless and committed people.
I am delighted that the Government has shown it is on their side with the New Deal scheme and increased funding. An extra £25m per year will go towards providing short term respite care in crisis or emergency situations, providing relief when it is most needed. A further £5m per year is to be invested in the development of an Expert Carers’ Programme to help support carers by teaching them new skills, for instance in first aid and dealing with stress.
The scheme has also established a telephone service, the National Carers Line, offering advice and providing information. Another key development is the right for carers to request flexible working hours from their employer which will have effect from April this year. I feel it is important for employers to recognise and help facilitate the selfless contribution carers make to our society.
These steps build on the Carers’ Grants scheme introduced in 1999, in which Labour will have invested over £1bn by 2008. It is also encouraging that the Government has announced a wide ranging review of its strategy towards helping carers. This will include a nationwide consultation with carers and voluntary organisations giving a voice to those most affected.
Through these measures I feel our investment will make a real difference to carers in our area. It is a great shame that the majority of carers struggle alone and do not know that help is available to them. This problem is being addressed in government proposals to enable GPs to prescribe social care and support.
In the meantime I would urge anyone in a care role to contact the National Carers Helpline on 08088 087777 to find out about the support on offer.
If you wish to get in touch with me about any of these issues, or on any other matters, please do not hesitate to do so by calling 01287 610878, e-mailing ashokkumarmp@parliament.uk, or writing to Ashok Kumar MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.
