Trident
Posted by Jo Swinson, MP for East Dunbartonshire, at 15:49, Wed 14 March 2007:
Tonight Parliament votes on the Government's plans to replace Trident, and I'd be interested in constituents' views on the issue.
Unfortunately the outcome of tonight's vote seems clear - the Conservatives are supporting the Government on this so in spite of a large number of Labour rebels and the Lib Dems voting against it is set to go through.
Do you think we should have a nuclear deterrent? Should our number of warheads be cut to kickstart international multilateral disarmament negotiations?
Do let me know what you think!
Kind regards,
Jo

I for one have no ideological standpoint on nuclear bombs. Such weapons exist (or being sought)and are in the hands of governments, which, lets face it, are one coup away from being overthrown by potential regimes perhaps best described as friendly to no one. I accept the fatalistic argument that deploying such weapons would potentially mean. Nevertheless, the UK should retain its own independent deterent. My only concern is giving Government contracts or Blank Cheques, which seems to be the same thing theses days, to uncontrolled managers. Just about all recent MOD contracts and subsequent National Audit reports will highlight this point. I am not adverse to cost, but it must be controlled. Furthermore, any weapon system must be UK controlled from the perspective of siting, firing and the satellite or whatever guidance system is to be utilised. Finally, I would expect a system that can deliver various warheads thus broadening tactical use.

In this current climate some sort of nuclear deterent sadly has to be mandatory for states such as the UK which could be an obvious target for numerous countries.
Although I also agree with the previous post that there has to be specific financial limits when the Government goes about replacing Trident.

I am pretty undecided on this matter, but I certainly don't think the UK needs as many as it does have. If pushed, I'd probably vote that we shouldn't replace them.
I really don't think there's anyone out there with nuclear weapons who would realistically attack us.
