Fairtrade
Posted by Meg Munn, MP for Sheffield, Heeley, at 15:55, Tue 13 March 2007:
As a Labour/Co-operative MP I am very pleased that Fairtrade is going from strength to strength.
Selling Fairtrade products was pioneered by the Co-operative movement, which has been offering Fairtrade as the norm for all its own-brand coffee and chocolate for more than three years. The news that Marks & Spencer is switching key clothing ranges to Fairtrade is the latest major decision by retailers. The Marks & Spencer initiative follows Sainsbury’s announcement just before Christmas that all its bananas will be Fairtrade certified – amounting to ten million individual Fairtrade bananas each week and will more than double the volume of Fairtrade bananas bought by Britain’s shoppers.
The growth of the Fairtrade brand directly benefits thousands of farmers and workers around the world. I welcome this and would welcome your views on this issue.

Well ain't that sweet - Meg really (no, really) cares about the poor in the world - shame she voted for the invasion of Iraq (in spite of telling me at a public meeting that she wouldn't) and now she's voted for a replacement to the Trident nuclear missile system - at a projected cost of £75 BILLION. Now, what constructive things could we have done with that money. Hmmm . . . . clean water and sanitation? education for all? renewable energy? Nope - Meg wants her bombs - and her fairtrade bananas. Hypocrite.
