Tackling climate change: an invitation - and other news...

Posted by Mark Lazarowicz, MP for Edinburgh North and Leith, at 16:39, Thu 8 March 2007:

I am writing to let you know I am organising an event this Sunday, March 11th, on the theme of "Tackling Climate Change: what the UK, Scotland - and you - can do". I am organising this event in conjunction with Sarah Boyack MSP and Malcolm Chisholm MSP. The venue is St. George's West Church, Shandwick Place. If you are interested in coming along to this event, you can find details on my website at http://www.marklazarowicz.org.uk/events/climatechange07.htm We will also be showing the film "An Inconvenient Truth" (starring Al Gore!) at 1.30 pm, before the meeting itself starts at 3.00 pm.

There are a number of important issues which we are debating in the House of Commons at the moment. Yesterday (Wednesday) we voted on proposals to reform the House of Lords. I am glad to say that the proposal for a 100% elected second chamber, which I support, had a big majority. Tomorrow (Friday), we will be discussing a "Private Members' Bill" introduced by a backbench Conservative MP, which is designed to restrict the voting rights of Scottish MPs at Westminster. Next week, there'll be the vote on Trident replacement.

I'll be putting up some more information about my own views on these issues on my "blog", which you can visit at http://www.marklazarowicz.org.uk/blog/index.html I'd be interested in the views of people living in my constituency on these or indeed any other issues. I'm also organising a consultation meeting for local people on the issue of Trident replacement, to be held this Sunday at 6.30 pm, in St. Marys RC Cathedral Church Hall (next to "Café Camino", beside the St. James Centre. I've organised the meeting in association with the Cathedral's Justice & Peace group, but the meeting is open to any interested local person (although please register in advance by email to doranka@parliament.uk). Apologies for the short notice, but the date of the Trident vote was only confirmed last week.

If you are interested in more information about what I've been doing in Parliament, you can see my latest Parliamentary newsletter on my website http://www.marklazarowicz.org.uk. This includes information about my campaigns on energy prices, access to public transport for disabled people, and fairtrade and international development, amongst other issues.

Regards

Mark Lazarowicz
