Update on the fight to save the Royal Surrey
Posted by Jeremy Hunt, MP for South West Surrey, at 16:28, Thu 1 March 2007:
At the moment, the biggest campaign I am involved in is the fight to save the Royal Surrey County Hospital from cuts and the threatened closure of its A & E unit.
The campaign has gathered moment since Christmas, with a visit to the Royal Surrey from Conservative leader David Cameron and the support of Penelope Keith in highlighting the extra travel time involved should services be removed from the hospital.
I am pleased to see that over 20,000 people have signed the petition on the 10 Downing Street website – it shows just how strongly people in Waverley and Guildford feel about saving their hospital and is becoming difficult to ignore.
We still have a fight on our hands though and people pressure does work, so I would urge all of you to support the campaign by:
• Writing and expressing your objections to those deciding on the future of the Royal Surrey:
- Chris Butler, Chief Executive Surrey Primary Care Trust, Bournewood House, Guildford Road, Chertsey, Surrey, KT16 0QA.
- Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, Secretary of State for Health, Department of Health, Richmond House, 79 Whitehall, SW1A 2NL. - Candy Morris, Chief Executive, South East Coast Strategic Health Authority, York House, 18-20 Massetts Road, Horley, Surrey RH6 7DE. • Signing the electronic petition on 10 Downing Street by logging into http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Save-RSCH/
• Visiting the Save the Royal Surrey website at www.savetheroyalsurrey.org.uk and volunteering to help with the campaign, or pledging money to support the campaign’s activities.

Dear Jeremy
Royal Surrey:
This is good, principled and effective local work; thank you. Ive signed the petition. The Royal Surrey may not be perfect but its not at all bad I've had excellent experiences there twice in the last 18 months.
I do hope you can find an equally strong and effective voice on the big national and international issues: Trident, drugs law reform, the ID System.
You are the only representative we have, and we voted you in to get these issues right and not always to follow party orthodoxy.
Everyone's talking about Wilberforce. He did not get his place in history by continuing to make the making the same mistakes other Tories had for centuries: he took on board the principled concern of others.
I like this "HearfromyourMP" business. Let'suse it. There's so much more to life than the A3 :-)
