ENVIRONMENT
Environmental concerns are high on the agenda both in Parliament and in the constituency. In February I held a meeting about reducing carbon emissions from homes – what is the best way and how do we persuade people to do so. Many members of the public came along for a really lively evening of discussion.
This was organised jointly with the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology – a non-political office whose job is to inform Parliament. Many ideas were put forward, which will also be sent to Ministers. I’m still waiting for confirmation from one of the note-takers that we have transcribed them properly and then they will be posted on my website www.annesnelgrove.co.uk
It was clear from the many comments on the night that this issue is very complex, there are no ‘quick fix’ solutions but that each and every one of us should play our part if we are to avoid the worst consequences of global warming.
THE RESPECT ACTION PLAN
Swindon has had problems with anti-social behaviour of varying kinds across the town. I met recently with with local police and night club owners to try and find solutions to the problem of yobs causing trouble on their way home after closing time. The Government has brought legislation, through the Licensing Act 2003, which can and should be used to help tackle alcohol related crime and disorder. Possible action includes using police power to designate alcohol disorder zones or to obtain a dispersal order for the nightclub area of Old Town where the problem seems to originate.
The Respect Action Plan set out an ambitious programme of work to build a modern culture of respect. It provides the police, councils and local communities with the tools they need to combat anti-social behaviour and improve our neighbourhoods. The Minister Tony McNulty has produced a short webcast (2.5 minutes) talking about the government's Respect agenda.

FAREPAK
Last month, I also met with Treasury officials and other MPs regarding the Farepak issue, to discuss alternative, safer options for customers. Next week at an open surgery in Asda, West Swindon, (10.30 – 12pm on 2 March) I will be meeting Guy Mason of Asda, to learn more about their Christmas savings scheme.
ESURGERY
A new E-surgery has been created on my website to empower residents to solve grievances quickly and effectively. Casework is a huge part of my job and I want to make sure that constituents have easy access to any advice they need.
Regards from Anne.
