Nadine Shows Her Support For British Tourism
Posted by Nadine Dorries, MP for Mid Bedfordshire, at 13:29, Tue 20 February 2007:
In response to a request from the organisers of the first British Tourism Week, which runs from 12th 18th March 2007, I will be ‘going back to the floor’ and visiting a number of local tourism businesses in Mid Bedfordshire on Friday 16th March to show my support for Britain’s £74 billion visitor economy.
During the day I plan to visit several attractions, including Woburn Safari Park, Ampthill Park, Houghton House, Stondon Motor Museum, Marston Vale Community Forest Centre and Elstow Abbey & the Moot Hall.
I believe British tourism week is a fantastic opportunity to promote the importance of the UK’s fifth largest industry – tourism – to the UK economy and look forward to spending a day visiting just some of the key attractions in Mid Beds. I am also encouraging my parliamentary colleagues on both sides of the House of Commons to do likewise in their constituencies also.
VisitBritain is to be congratulated on the work they are doing to promote the UK tourism industry and I hope that British Tourism Week is a great success.
My proposed visits will be as follows:
10.00am – Woburn Safari Park - Britain's largest drive-through safari park.
11.15am – Ampthill Park – Former hunting ground of King Henry VIII; monument marks the site of Ampthill Castle, where Katherine of Aragon was kept under house arrest during her divorce.
12.00pm – Houghton House - Shell of a 17th-century mansion, reputedly the inspiration for the 'House Beautiful' in John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress.
1.00pm – Stondon Motor Museum & Garden Centre – The UK’s largest private collection of motor vehicles.
2.30pm – Marston Vale Community Forest Centre – Lively conservation centre, set in the spectacular Millennium Country Park.
4.00pm – Elstow Abbey & Moot Hall – Elstow, is the birthplace of John Bunyan, who was baptised at the Abbey and worshipped their regularly. Moot Hall is a timber-framed market hall set on the village green, and a museum of life in the 17th century.
Under the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales, British Tourism Week highlights the contribution made by businesses from every part of the UK’s tourism industry, large and small, public and commercial, in maximising future opportunities such as the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

While it is not the function of the constituency MP, or mine to offer advice to any of the local attractions in finding more visitors, it does seem that the Stondon Motor Museum could be doing a bit more to make itself visible. Being reasonably socially mobile, a life long motor car enthusiast, and living nearby in Pulloxhill, I first heard of the Stondon museum today in your message.I'll get down there soon!
