I am writing to update you on my work as your MP.

Over the last month or so, I have been lobbied in Westminster by several constituents on behalf of the local Royal College of Nursing, the Royal National Institute of the Blind and Bucks Unison. I always try to meet constituents who are taking part in organised lobbies of Parliament so that I can listen to their concerns.

In Aylesbury, the issue the most people have contacted me about recently is Thames Water’s plan to build a sewage storage pipe in Daly Way, near Tring Road. I met representatives from the firm on Friday to discuss the issue and the problem is that the sewers under Tring Road are not large enough to cope with today’s water use. The controversy locally is over the best way to address this problem.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to the official opening of the new Burns Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. The Unit is a state-of-the-art facility and one of only a handful such centres in the South East. I hope that it will save lives and it was great to see that at least some money is reaching the frontline of the local NHS. At the same time, real worries continue about the impact that NHS deficits could have on our local services.

I am always keen to see local youngsters succeed in their aims and was therefore delighted to award Aylesbury Rotary Club’s Young Chef of the Year prize to 13-year-old Anna Farrell, who I hope will enjoy making use of her talent.

Meanwhile, The Raj in Wendover won my online poll to find the most popular curry house in the constituency, and has now been entered into the national Tiffin Cup competition. Good luck to them!

My role as Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland is also keeping me busy. I travelled to Belfast last week to meet several journalists and visited Warrenpoint Port to discuss the Government’s recent Port Review. The Northern Ireland (St Andrews Agreement) Act was rushed through Parliament during the Queens’ Speech debate and next week we start debating the Justice and Security (Northern Ireland) Bill. Before that debate, I am going to Belfast to take part in the Northern Ireland Grand Committee debate on poverty and social exclusion in the province, and will visit community projects in the deprived Shankill area of Belfast during my trip.
