Parliamentary motion calls for upgrading of A1079 road

Posted by Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, at 11:03, Thu 30 November 2006:

Two East Riding MPs have tabled a parliamentary motion calling on the Government to provide funding for the upgrading of the A1079 road between Hull and York.

Beverley and Holderness MP, Graham Stuart and East Yorkshire MP, Greg Knight, tabled the motion, three weeks after launching a petition calling for improvements to the road. The A1079, which runs through the urban centres of Beverley, Market Weighton and Pocklington and is predominantly rural in nature, is used by an estimated 15,000 vehicles a day. Just 4.5km of the road, however, is dual carriageway, with the remaining 39.5km single carriageway.

According to the Department of Transport, there have been more than 275 accidents and 16 fatalities on the road in the past five years alone. Local residents have already set up a campaign group, Action Access A1079, which aims to ‘improve the safety record by making access onto, from and across the road safer and by reducing the delays on the route by various means,’ and ‘improve the flow on the road in order to develop the economic outlook from, to and within the region.’

Graham used a debate in the House of Commons in June to call on Ministers to provide funding for the widening of the road. Both MPs believe that the region has been overlooked for too long. For the next five years, the East Riding will be allocated just £9.12 per person per year to be spent on integrated transport, compared with a national average of £14.47.

Graham said, “The campaign is going from strength to strength. We have collected hundreds of signatures in just a few weeks and this motion will hopefully grab the attention of Ministers. People are telling me that they have been struggling with the A1079 for years. Congestion is getting worse, the number of accidents is steadily increasing – it is time for the Government to give the East Riding a decent transport infrastructure which matches its strengthening economic performance.

Greg Knight said, “The East Riding is thriving. More and more people are moving here to take advantage of our relatively high standards of living, excellent leisure opportunities and an education system which continues to achieve year on year improvements. It is time for the Government to support this progress with good transport links. With the support of local residents, campaigners and the East Riding Council, public money ought to be forthcoming from the government for a modern, updated A1079.”

The petition reads:

‘We, the undersigned, call on the Government to provide funding for the upgrading of the A1079 road between Hull and York.’
