My new website; Your ideas for tackling climate change
Posted by Phyllis Starkey, MP for Milton Keynes South West, at 14:07, Thu 23 November 2006:
Dear all,
I have recently launched a new website to further increase engagement with my constituents.
I want to start on-going discussions on issues like climate change, and I am asking for your ideas on what the Government should do next to help meet the target of a 60% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2010.
Two months from now (in January) I will publish a collected version of all of your proposals for further discussion, and after that I will be seeking meetings with Ministers to present your suggestions.
Please visit the ‘Your Say’ section at www.phyllisstarkey.co.uk and post your comments and suggestions. I hope this will be the first of many issues we can discuss, so do check back to see what else is being worked on.
Best wishes,
Phyllis Starkey

Think we must begin to realise we have exhausted all the easy (administratively speaking) options. This is time for tough decisions, changing the rules and reorganising the way we think. Fortunately there are LOTS of options to combat global warming. A couple of examples roughly 40%(DOT figures) are consumed by transport. Forget air transport it’s a small fragment of the energy we devote to getting to work(its important for other reasons). Look at Personal Rapid Transit (http://www.atsltd.co.uk/prt/faq/) this is a way of getting people out of their cars and into something less polluting and more energy efficient. PRT is 5 times more efficient than a car and 2 times than a bus. Think 5 times LESS CO2 than a car. So why don’t we see them? Simple it’s an administrative problem, the councils own the rights of way but they don’t know about new technology. Entrepreneurs can’t get venture capital with out government assurances over rights of way. Solution show some of the new technology solutions to directly the right people (Ken Livingstone for example).
Another example, why not give more priority to windfarm development rather than giving all the power to NIMBYs? Why not try to simulate new sustainable technologies – NASA offers a number of large cash prizes to achieve certain specific ends. This simulated a number of competitive startups to produce surprising solutions. Do this for *****insulation**** and alternative energy production.
