Nadine’s Survey Reveals Local Business Suffering From Major Skills Shortage

Following a business survey that I recently undertook in my constituency, I am calling upon the Chancellor of the Exchequer to address the serious skills shortage that has been highlighted by local business opinion. The survey was recently sent out to 1000 local businesses and is designed to give me a clear view of the hopes and fears of the local business community in Mid Beds.
As a new Member of Parliament I am keen to find ways to give those I represent a chance to advise me of their views. This allows me to represent them better both locally and at Westminster. Some of the results from my Business survey were in line with what I expected, however, I was alarmed that so many local businesses are clearly having problems finding new staff who possess the training and qualifications they require; a problem that 76% felt was getting worse rather than better; after nearly ten years in government, Labour has clearly failed to tackle this problem.
In an age when Broadband and the use of the internet is so important to the running of a successful business I was also surprised to read that 91% of respondents felt that the Government should provide more support for small businesses investing in technology. The results may not be scientific but they do send some very clear and interesting messages.
I have written to the Chancellor calling on him to address these issues - we will see what, if anything, he does.
