Dear friends,

Thanks for signing up for updates about my work for you and Oxford East!

As your MP I’m here to help, and if you have a problem or a concern I’d like to know – you can always telephone on 772893 or email me on andrewsmith.mp@virgin.net or come to one of my regular advice surgeries.

As this is my first post I’m including a summary of what I have done recently – to give you a flavour of what I do every week and the issues that affect Oxford East.

Working Hard for Oxford East:

  • Questions in the Commons, meetings with Ministers and Trusts to try to resolve the funding deficits in Oxfordshire’s NHS

  • Opposing the proposal to put the Primary Care Trust Commissioning out to tender.

  • Insisting that district nurses, health visitors and other community health staff should remain core NHS employees.

  • Supporting Pakistan Earthquake assistance – with local appeal for funds and speaking at fundraising dinner.

  • Speaking in the House of Commons in support of the Climate Change and Energy Conservation Bill which will put in place measures to help microgeneration and community energy schemes, and stronger accountability of Government on delivery of climate change targets.

  • Welcoming young people from the Oxford Youth Council to Parliament to discuss the new Children and Adoption Bill.

  • Addressing Oxford students and meeting international aids campaigners in support of the Students Stop Aids campaign.

  • Supporting campaigners for Trade Justice.

  • Celebrating 10 years of the Reading Quest initiative in local schools, helping children to read.

  • Regular advice surgeries in Barton, St Clements, Rose Hill and Blackbird Leys.

* Doorstep surgery in Headington Hill.
