Make it more difficult for betting shops to replace local businesses, says Roger
Posted by Roger Godsiff, MP for Birmingham, Hall Green, at 16:54, Thu 10 April 2014:
Roger is supporting calls for a change in the classification of betting shops so they are no longer in the same usuage class as local businesses such as cafes or pubs. Creating a separate planning use class for betting shops would help to ensure proper scrutiny was carried out before a new betting shop could open, particularly in areas where there was already a high concentration.
Roger wrote to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, to express his support for these proposals. He is concerned that these shops suck money out of the pockets of those who can least afford it, and may also lead to addiction or problem gambling, as well as increased crime in the area.
He commented: “In no way can yet another William Hill or Paddy Power be considered a good replacement for a much-loved local pub or café, and I do not believe that they should be in the same planning class. I hope that Eric Pickles will listen to those who do not want to see their local communities subjected to an ever-higher concentration of betting shops, instead of businesses which make a contribution to the local area.”

Do we need betting shops? Who profits from the betting shops? I see people bagging in the streets, who is to be blamed, the government for its failed policy? Look who are making decisions for us, those who have studies at Eton and Cambridge and Oxford and are well off and as such they live in cuckoos land. They have never faced miseries. They are in bed with journalist and corporate financiers who put them in power in the first place.
I was not surprised as to how facts can be twisted by a spokes person from Israel when he stated that the Palestinian State never existed when historical evidence suggests otherwise. It is the Israel State that never existed. If Israel has faced holocaust in the past why are they practicing holocaust, time and again, on their neigbouring Palestinian State which has been shown on TV. They are murdering innocent people and not a few who might be culprit.
With regard to Bahrain, several people have received life imprisonment for peaceful demonstration against the fanciest minority rulers, where is justice?
Why are the UK and US continuously supplying arms to Bahrain and Israel so that they can terrorise its own people and the neighbours? This should stop immediately.

I agree with you about there being too many betting-shops, but I guess they meet some public demand !
I am more concerned at the increasing number of OFF-LICENCES including in Hall Green.I even saw a garage (petrol station ) which could sell alcoholic drinks.(outside Birmingham) I enjoy the odd glass myself, but this is ridiculous. I also support the raising of minimal pricing. Regards, Ian Grant.

Public demand for betting shops? Are we the nation of gamblers? Is UK the nation of smokers and youth bing alcoholic consumers as it is not possible to be a responsible drinker? No doubt NHS is full of such patients. We need to go back and be a nation adopting ethical principles, morality and god fearing. Take the example of what bankers did and we all have to pay for it.
