Support Our Local Community Groups

Posted by Laura Sandys, MP for South Thanet, at 13:45, Mon 18 November 2013:

Thanet has hands down some of the most inspired and hard working community groups of anywhere around. With real vision for our towns, they find a way to make something happen, even against all the odds. Most importantly, this vision is owned by the community; it’s something that local residents have decided they want or need. And shouldn’t every neighbourhood be able to decide what’s best for it? I am always hugely supportive and enjoy working with these dedicated groups of volunteers who give up their time and energy to make Thanet a better place.

This week there was very good news for Ramsgate as St Augustine’s church in Ramsgate won initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop a Pugin and St Augustine’s education and visitor’s centre. The architect Pugin designed St Augustine’s as his ‘ideal church’ and is world renowned for his designs in Westminster that include the clock tower we all affectionately call ‘Big Ben’. Saint Augustine is likewise celebrated in the theological world for landing just down the road and with him bringing Christianity to Anglo-Saxon England. We have the most extraordinary history in Thanet, not least through our ties with these two men. I am very supportive of St Augustine’s plans which will ensure that more visitors come to Thanet and learn about our very special history.

Ramsgate has been particularly busy over the last few weeks with funding applications and I have just written a letter of support for another fabulous community project. I also met up with the Friends of Ellington Park the other day who have just been told that they are in the running for £50,000 from The People’s Millions to develop a wildlife garden for the community.

There are very exciting happenings over in Broadstairs as well as the Town Team is also shortlisted for the People’s Millions for their innovative and exciting Town Shed project that will be a real community hub for socialising and sharing DIY skills. Similar initiatives in other parts of the country and world aimed at men have had huge success in promoting health, wellbeing and community spirit!

Both projects will need our votes on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th November as they are featured on ITV Meridian news at 6pm. You don’t even need to pick between the projects as they are not up against each other so both can win the money to develop their projects. I am off today to meet another one of our fantastic community groups looking to submit a lottery funding application- watch this space!
