Puting Thanet and coastal towns back at the front of the queue
Posted by Laura Sandys, MP for South Thanet, at 12:43, Fri 6 September 2013:
Coastal towns have something very special about them. I may be slightly biased but Thanet’s are particularly unique and it’s no surprise at all that they’ve inspired some Britain’s greatest from Turner to Dickens. Of course seaside towns also have specific challenges and I was very pleased when last week a Government fund aimed at helping coastal areas to achieve their economic potential was increased to £29million.
It was particularly good to have the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, The Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, in Ramsgate for this announcement. He was here visiting the Marlowe Innovation Centre’s new project funded by this pot of money which will create 70 jobs when it opens next year. The Coastal Communities Fund was created with the revenue from marine activity and in particular, our offshore windfarms. As these have been so successful, the amount on offer next year has increased which is good news for all of us!
Some of you may have seen reports in the national press last week following the publication of a piece of research by the Office for National Statistics who had looked at the economies of large coastal towns in 2007 and 2010. The report is a very clear reflection of the prolonged neglect of coastal towns that took place under the last Labour Government.
When I was elected, I was very clear that South Thanet would never again be left at the end of the line on my watch. I’ve worked hard to ensure that ministers know all about us and continue to work hard to keep us at the top of the agenda. This increase to the Coastal Communities Fund combined with the Minister’s visit is a clear indication that the Government is listening and taking action.
We’re now at the very front of the queue- and we’re here to stay!

Laura, that's fantastic news. But how are we going to deal with your support for fracking. I was shocked to learn that you support this terribly damaging practice, when you have always made such sense before!
