Sandys Welcomes Pupil Premium Rise for Thanet Primaries
Posted by Laura Sandys, MP for South Thanet, at 11:53, Thu 25 July 2013:
Laura Sandys has welcomed the Government’s decision to increase the primary school pupil premium by 44%. This will provide £1300 per pupil for those who are in receipt of free school meals. Laura said: “Many headteachers across Thanet have found the existing level of pupil premium invaluable. I have been feeding this information back to the Department and even raised the positive impact that this money was having in Parliament, so I am very pleased that the primary pupil premium is rising by such a large amount. This is the biggest cash rise that the funding has seen; worth £400 more per pupil in 2014-2015.
“In 2012-13 schools in South Thanet received £2.4 million in pupil premium funding so based on these levels, this rise could represent an additional £1,056,000 for our local primary schools.
“At one school in Thanet where 56% of the children are in receipt of free school meals, the headteacher advised me that the pupil premium has had great success, doubling key stage 2 attainment and improving maths and English scores by 41%.
“Heads know what their students need and so are free to spend this money in the way in which it will best assist them. Breakfast clubs and after-school homework clubs are just two of the ways that this funding has been used already. More money coming into Thanet for the children who need it most is very good news indeed.”
