Julian Smith MP - Reporting Back - Summer 2013
Welcome to this e-mail edition of Reporting Back - a regular update of my work at Westminster and across the Skipton and Ripon constituency.
Countdown to the Tour de France in Yorkshire In the build up to next year's Grand Depart, I have begun promoting opportunities for communities and businesses by going on a Doorstep Tour. Travelling legs of the route, I met with residents and businesses to discuss how they could get involved. I even got on two wheels in Buckden for the Craven Herald's photographer whose image you see above! Follow my steps >> (http://juliansmithmp.co.uk/index.php/2013/05/29/doorsteptour/)
Superfast Broadband Roll-Out Underway The delivery of superfast broadband to communities and businesses across North Yorkshire is now well underway. It's a project that will last until 2015 so I know some areas are still waiting for better internet connections, but I've been at the launches of schemes in Ripon and Burton Leonard recently and I hope to attend more switch-ons in the months ahead. Read about the Burton Leonard launch >> (http://juliansmithmp.co.uk/index.php/2013/05/30/burton-leonard-broadband-launch/)
More Say for Communities over Wind Farms I have been campaigning to raise the concerns of many communities over wind farms, addressing the impact that wind turbines can have on rural landscape such as North Yorkshire. I am pleased at the recent announcement that communities are going to have a greater say over the siting of onshore wind farms. It is a step forward in protecting the beauty of our countryside. Time to Let Britain Decide
It has been 40 years since British people were allowed a say on our Membership of the European Union. That is too long and it should change which is why I will be voting in favour of a Referendum and am supporting the 'Let Britain Decide' campaign. Concerns Heard About Rural Schools I am pleased that my concerns over the funding of rural schools have been listened to by the Department of Education. Changes to the planned funding formula acknowledge the challenges of sparsity and give local authorities greater flexibility which I hope will enable the high quality teaching we have in some of the most rural communities in the country to continue. Appointment as a Small Business Ambassador Having set up, run and grown my own business before becoming an MP, I am delighted that the Prime Minister has appointed me to be one of twelve Small Business Ambassadors for my Party. I look forward to helping promote and represent small businesses, listen to their concerns and feed them back to the Prime Minister. Re-Opening Settle Post Office It was great to open the revamped Post Office in Settle. It has extended opening hours and services and underlines the importance that branches play in our communities. More about the new branch >> (http://juliansmithmp.co.uk/index.php/2013/05/10/settle-post-office-re-opened/) Thank you for reading this Reporting Back. Please do get in touch if you have any issues or concerns you would like to raise.
With best wishes

Re. Time to let Britain decide.
We, the people of the UK who pay you to do what WE need, want a referendum NOW! Not in 2017 when in my and most peoples opinions, the Conservative party won't be in power. Hopefully neither will the Labour party and certainly not the LibDems. I and millions of other people will be voting for the only party that gives a damn about us and our country, and has a great leader, that's UKIP. You all have had your chance, and you have ALL failed us miserably. This is not a slur on you Julian, as I think your heart is in the right place, but you are lost in the Tory party.
Andy.

Investigating the article "Appointment as a Small Business Ambassador" I was disappointed to learn the the much-vaunted Start-up Loans are limited to people from 18-30 years old. Why not older entrepreneurs? Some of us have a lot of life and business experience and the likelihood of success is far greater with the older, more experienced entrepreneur.
I suspect it's a political thing - trying to show the politicians are supporting Our Young People - but it isn't realistic in terms of proper use of public money.
Extend Start-up Loans to ANYBODY who wants to start a thriving business!
