Council’s should 'fight back' rising energy bills by negotiating on behalf of residents
Following an initiative taken by a number of councils in London who have joined together to try and collectively force energy companies to offer lower tariffs to customers, Birmingham MP Roger Godsiff, has written to all of the local councillors in his Hall Green constituency suggesting that Birmingham City Council should consider a similar scheme.
Roger said: "Birmingham City Council is the second largest council in the country with 1 million people and it could operate a similar scheme for the residents of Birmingham. All that Birmingham residents have to do is register their interest and then the council could then negotiate on their behalf to get the best deal."
Roger went on to say: "Councils are having to make massive cutbacks right across the board and I would have thought that anything that they can do to' fightback' the seemingly endless rises in energy prices makes a lot of sense".

The wonder is that this hasn't been done before, especially in Birmingham, which led the world in the provision of municipal services, such as the city's water supply, etc. They should also ensure that every single space controlled by the Council is fitted with PIR detectors, so that no lights are on when no-one is present. Lights are also left on in locked public toilets & closed parks, for example. What about using the various rivers which run through the city for hydro-electric power generation?

With "benefit cuts" etc. how can they justify the increases especially for OAP's,the shareholders should not receive any dividends for 2/3 years. Why can't all the energy company's "pool" resources!! Volume = lower costs?

Why privatise energy, water, rail, etc. in the first place? It was a mistake, the government can re-nationalise them by an act of Parliament without paying any premium. The council sold the houses cheaply to the tenants and who made a fortune. Presently council is running inefficiently, but who cares. Why did the UK government sold the gold reserve cheaply? I have pointed out some of the inefficiency but there are many more. It is the journalist who have made us aware of the malpractices but with no end in sight.
