Update on Westminster
Posted by Alison Seabeck, MP for Plymouth, Moor View, at 10:35, Fri 2 November 2012:
It has been a busy week in which I have been able to raised issues varying from removing the stigma attached to people with mental health, through to highlighting the Government's inept handling of housing benefit changes so that the HB bill is rising fast, rents continue to rise and fewer homes are being built all taking us into a major housing housing crisis. I also sought answers to concerns about the cut in the number of homes being insulated particularly for pensioners. We have also seen the Government defeated on its EU position and whilst I am a strong support of the EU I cannot condone waste and would argue that the EU, like its member states has to be more careful about it budget during the recession . The campaigns on which my constituents are writing relate to animal welfare issues like badger culling and circus animals, as well as concerns about fuel tax and regional pay in SW. My casework is growing daily because of the impact of many of the government's shambolic changes, whether in health, education, disability assessment, transport and rail franchises or housing. Do you have any thoughts on any of these issues. If so please do let me know.

It is great to read that you are tackling so many issues. I am on the same page as you for all these areas.
Mental illness is something I have been living with for many years, so it is great to learn that my local MP is on my side (unlike those in government and the media!).
Rents and housing are a nightmare; trying to find a place to live that is affordable is very tough. More of us are either living with parents or sharing a house to bursting point.
Like you, I support the EU, but there does seem so much waste and bad management. Good to know you are trying to make those in London see sense and recognise that the SW of England matters.
All the best, Hadyn

In my opinion on disabilities for adults help is either overbearing or lapsidaisical (Spelling).
I myself have aspergers and i can tell you in order to cut cost they have been holding back disability claims for up to 6 years (My disability being held 2 years)under the pretext of a tribunal and then re-awarding it when they can no longer stave off the tribunal knowing that by law they would lose. (Not to mention their panel being no-where near professional in fact the general ignorance towards autism in the benefit system is appalling.)
On top of that i can tell you when it comes to care homes and school provisions it is all abuse and profit whenever there is an inspection they are always made aware and consciously lean on or discredit any autistic person who speaks out when the inspector arrives doing their utmost to make sure they are no ware to be seen.
What i would like to see is adult autistic people supported in the home in an un-invasive manner where help can be asked for when the person believes it necessary instead of forcing drugging and care homes.
Home support from traveling carers in the same way it is done for the elderly would be both a less expensive and less distressing method at least giving the autistic individual some freedom of choice and dignity.
Finally when it comes to benefit things that are identified as permanent like autism or other such life-long diagnosis should be indefinite there is no need to waste forms going after those who have a life-long diagnosis unless they are in an exceptionally high paid job and even then should be easy to re-claim if they should fall out of work.
