We Need a Full Public Inquiry into the Banks
Posted by Joan Walley, MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, at 15:28, Thu 5 July 2012:
It’s been a week since we first heard about the banks fiddling interest-rate figures.
At the weekend Labour called for a full, judge-led independent inquiry to get to the bottom of those practices and the wider problems of culture in our banks that led to this scandal. That is the only way we will rebuild public trust in the banks we all rely on.
But today, David Cameron is still refusing to do what’s right. He's completely out of touch with the gravity and scale of this crisis. As always with this Prime Minister he is standing up for the wrong people, not acting in the national interest.
We need to show that the public won't stand for this. Asking a committee of politicians to judge the bankers won’t restore public trust.
The House of Commons votes on whether to have a proper independent judge-led inquiry today.
We’ve had missed opportunities to sort out the banking industry before and now we need to seize this moment.
We need to look at what’s happened in the past – but also look at how we can restore confidence in our banking industry in the future.
From people who work in banks, to people and businesses served by banks – we all need the confidence that only a full judge-led inquiry can give. Asking a committee of politicians to judge the bankers won’t restore public trust.
Kind regards Joan Walley

I think we need to get this matter sorted out quickly so that this terrible wrong can be righted.
Therefore, I'll settle for a parliament enquiry in the interim.
I do hope none of my Party will be implicated. This truly worries me.
Nice to hear from you Joan. You do a good job for your constituents.
