Cameron’s govt gets more and more shambolic

Following last month’s disastrous budget, there was more bad news for the government this week.
The Leveson inquiry into phone hacking took evidence from Rupert Murdoch. And he came out with some devastating revelations.
Government Ministers – including Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary, who was given the job of taking an impartial decision on News International’s bid to take over BSkyB, had secretly been in contact with NI to give them advance information about the progress of the decision-making.
Hunt denied having improper contact himself, but admitted his special adviser had been in touch with the Murdochs – he has now resigned as a result.
If this isn’t corrupt, it’s certainly sleazy. It shows Ministers are totally in the pocket of Rupert Murdoch. I was pleased last summer when Ed Miliband distanced himself from the Murdochs, and admitted politicians had got far too cosy with NI. As the revelations continue to come out, it's even clearer that he made the right call.
But on a day-to-day basis, people in Trafford will be more directly affected by the bad news on the economy that also hit the government this week. Very regrettably, we’re now back in recession, as the UK economy shrank again last month.
This is entirely down to George Osborne’s disastrous mismanagement of the economy. His cuts – too fast and too deep – have destroyed thousands of jobs, which means people have less money to spend, so the local economy suffers, so local businesses have to cut back even more jobs. It’s his devastating cycle of economic incompetence that’s putting the recovery into reverse.
I’m very worried what it means for jobs for our young people, and I know many people in Trafford share my concerns.
Next week, we have the opportunity to send a message to the Tories to tell them what we think about their damaging policy mistakes. The local election results that come in from across the country are the plainest way we can tell David Cameron, and his LibDem stooge Nick Clegg, that their policies are failing.
We know from the conversations we’ve been having on the doorstep in Trafford that people are angry, and the elections are your chance to have your say. Please make sure you use your vote on 3 May to send Trafford Tories packing and send a message to the government.
(And if you'd like to meet our fantastic local election candidates, come along to see us outside Sainsbury’s in Urmston this Saturday from 11 am. We’ll be very pleased to see you).
